The Kind of Leader I Choose To Be

Leadership has been sold to us as a pedestal.

A hierarchy.
A spotlight.
A figure at the front shouting the way.

Leadership has been mis-sold to us.

People imagine it looks like standing at the front, being the loudest, directing the way forward with certainty.

But that’s never been my experience of leadership.

To me, leadership is not about authority; it’s about orientation.

It’s the way a warm fire draws people toward themselves, not toward you. It’s the way a steady flame shows there is safety nearby. It’s the way a beacon lets you know you’re not walking alone in the dark.

A true leader is not out ahead commanding the procession. A true leader is someone who has walked a few steps further than you and is willing to say:

“Here’s what I’ve learned. Take what you need. Your path will still be your own.”

Leadership isn’t rigid. It isn’t hierarchical. It isn’t a pedestal or a performance.

Leadership is presence.

The kind of presence that invites people back into themselves. The kind of presence that says, “You get to move at your pace.” The kind of presence that strengthens others instead of overshadowing them.

I’m not here to be a commander.

I’m here to be a signal; clear, grounded, steady.

A leader doesn’t force alignment. A leader becomes aligned enough that their clarity becomes a reference point for others.

A leader doesn’t drag people. They illuminate what’s possible.

A leader doesn’t gatekeep the path. They hold the flame long enough for others to see their own.

This is the kind of leader I am becoming, and have always been:

  • A beacon.
  • A guidepost.
  • A steady flame in shifting weather.

Not here to be followed, but here to help others find their own direction with more ease, safety, and truth than they had before.

Leadership is not about getting in front.

Leadership is about standing firm enough in yourself that others can feel their own strength through you.

It’s about being a few steps ahead in the dark, turning on your lantern, and saying gently:

“This way is safe, if you want to walk with me.”

Not dragging. Not pushing. Not demanding. Not dictating.

Because your path won’t look exactly like mine. Your timing won’t match mine. Your truth will unfold in its own rhythm.

My role is not to control your becoming; my role is to witness it, honour it, and illuminate what you can’t yet see.

Beacon leadership is not glamorous.

It’s not flashy. It’s not “alpha.” It is steady. It is honest. It is rooted.

A beacon doesn’t force anyone to follow its direction. It simply stands in its truth and shines.

Consistently. Reliably. Fiercely gentle.

And in doing so, it becomes recognisable to those who are looking for it.

This is the kind of leader I am.

Not the kind who wants control. The kind who holds clarity.

Not the kind who demands loyalty. The kind who offers safety.

A leader who doesn’t need followers; just people ready to return to themselves.

I’m not here to be out front.

I’m here to be anchored and visible enough that others can find their way home to themselves by the light I refuse to dim anymore.

This is my leadership.
